Toronto History Part Two: Toronto in the Twentieth Century

This tour is a fantastic follow up to our tour of Toronto’s History in the Nineteenth Century. Our tour of Toronto’s twentieth century starts off right where the earlier history tour finishes, outside the Gooderham (Flatiron) building. From there, we’ll follow the transition of Toronto’s downtown district, as it moved from the Saint Lawrence Market neighbourhood to Yonge and Queen Streets.

This tour will introduce you to some of the city’s most prominent landmarks, constructed in the twentieth century. Buildings that we visit and learn about include Union Station, the King Edward Hotel, the Royal York Hotel, Commerce Court North, the Hudson’s Bay building, the Eaton Centre, the Elgin Winter Garden theatre Centre, Old City Hall, New City Hall, Nathan Phillips Square, the Hospital for Sick Children and Queen’s Park.

Things You will Need to Know about this Tour

The tour begins outside the eastern most point of the Flatiron (or Gooderham) building, pictured on the right. The Flatiron building is located at 49 Wellington Street East, where Front and Wellington Streets meet up at Church Street. The Flatiron building is a short walk east from Union Station.
It takes about two hours and is conducted largely outdoors.
It is not circular, it does not finish back where it starts. The closest subway station to the start is “Union”. The closest subway station to the ending point is “Queen’s Park”. Both the starting and stopping points are very close to the subway.
