Neighbourhood Tours

Our Neighbourhood Tours work a little differently than our other tours. You’ll notice that there are no set dates and times. These tours are offered by SPECIAL REQUEST, which means that you should contact us a few days before you come out, and let us know what day and time you’d like to attend. Also, because these tours are offered to limited numbers, the COST is slightly higher ($15 per adult).

How It Works

Take a look through the four neighbourhood walks currently available. When you’ve chosen one, contact us by email at richard@muddyyorktours.com or telephone at (416) 487-9017, and let us know what day and time you’d like to come out. You can confirm all details and then pay for the tour when you meet your guide.

Cabbagetown, Corktown And The Distillery

STARTING POINT : northeast corner of Wellesley Street East and Parliament Street.

ENDING POINT : main entrance to the Distillery District.

DURATION : approximately 2-hours (conducted entirely outdoors).

COST : $15.00 per person (group rates available).

On this walk, we’ll explore the enchanting neighbourhoods of Cabbagetown, Corktown and the popular Distillery District. The back streets and lane ways of Cabbagetown are lined with charming Victorian houses. We’ll walk through Corktown, where the Irish Catholic immigrants of a century ago used to live, and we will follow the routes that they used to walk to work at the Gooderham and Worts Distillery District. As we pass by the Necropolis Cemetery, we will talk about the lives of a few famous Torontonians who are laid to rest there. We will also take a detour through Riverdale Zoo, and take in a sweeping panorama of the Don River.

This tour concludes at the main entrance to the Gooderham and Worts Distillery District, Toronto’s most famous industrial complex, which now houses exclusive art galleries and cafes.

The Annex

STARTING POINT : outside main entrance of the Royal Ontario Museum on Bloor Street West.

ENDING POINT : corner of Bathurst and Bloor Streets.

DURATION : approximately 2-hours (conducted entirely outdoors).

COST : $15.00 per person (group rates available).

"The Annex" is the name for the Toronto neighbourhood that lies between Avenue Road in the east, Bathurst Street in the west, Bloor Street in the south and Dupont Street in the north. This charming residential neighbourhood was laid out in the 1870s and 1880s, and immediately started to attract Toronto’s elite residents. In keeping with this, we will visit the former home of George Gooderham, one of the richest men in the history of Toronto. His mansion was constructed at the end of the nineteenth century and still survives in the southeast Annex. Timothy Eaton, the patriarch of the Department Store family, constructed a house in the western end of the Annex, which has sadly disappeared, but we will take a stroll through his former neighbourhood, too. We also visit some sites of public interest, including the Royal Ontario Museum, the Royal Conservatory of Music (the birthplace of Hamilton’s McMaster University) and conclude in Mirvish Village.

Royal Ontario Museum, Yorkville And University Of Toronto

STARTING POINT : outside main entrance of the Royal Ontario Museum on Bloor Street West.

ENDING POINT : corner of Yonge and Cumberland Streets.

DURATION : between 2-hours and 2½-hours (largely outdoors, but partially indoors).

COST : $15.00 per person (group rates available).

This tour focuses on the architecture of the Royal Ontario Museum and the University of Toronto, as well as the history of the Yorkville neighbourhood. The Saint George (downtown) campus of the University of Toronto is home to over a century and a half of architectural styles, and the appearance of the campus is constantly changing. The Royal Ontario Museum itself shows four distinct architectural styles, from the original structure built just before the First World War, to the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal which opened in June, 2007. Moving up to Yorkville, we will discuss it’s beginning as a village completely distinct from the city of Toronto, through it’s time as Toronto’s "hippie hang out", to it’s modern incarnation as the trendy spot for international celebrities when they visit Toronto.

"Little Italy" College Street Tour

STARTING POINT : southeast corner of Bathurst Street and College Street.

ENDING POINT : College Street just west of Dovercourt Road.

DURATION : approximately 90-minutes (entirely outdoors).

COST : $15.00 per person (group rates available).

This tour explores College Street, the heart of Toronto’s original "Little Italy", from Bathurst Street west to around Dovercourt Road. It was during the 1920s that College Street's 'Little Italy', became recognized as the residential and commercial centre of Toronto's Italian community. However, Italian immigration really started back around 1885. A century later, in 1985, the local business association on College Street officially adopted the "Little Italy" name in recognition of the role this neighbourhood has played as the starting point for Italians in Toronto.

There is an emerging Portuguese community dwelling in Little Italy these days, but this neighbourhood is still considered to be an authentic home to Toronto’s Italian community. Like Greektown on Danforth Avenue, Little Italy’s sidewalks are jammed with locals and visitors sipping their espressos on the street side patios. On this tour, we’ll point out some of the most popular bars, cafes and restaurants in the neighbourhood, while giving you an introduction into the local history, as well.
