Afternoon Tea at Toronto’s First Post Office

Come and enjoy a traditional afternoon tea in the historic surroundings of Toronto’s First Post Office. The post office, constructed in 1833, will be converted for an afternoon into an intimate tea room. After you arrive and check in, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a light afternoon tea in the post office’s Victorian interior. After tea, a presentation on some element of Toronto’s past will be given. Read on for information on what will be served, what will be presented and how to make reservations!

Menu

Tea will include a selection of teas, coffee or apple cider. The menu will also include tea sandwiches (a selection of egg salad, tuna, salmon and cream cheese and lox), plain and raisin scones served with butter and jam, and an assortment of cakes, pastries and tarts.

"CHRISTMAS IN TORONTO"

Learn about the history of early Toronto, and the Victorian origins of our modern-day Christmas. Come in from the cold and warm yourself by the fireplace in the intimate surroundings of Torontos First Post Office, constructed in 1833. Participants can enjoy a late afternoon tea, before settling down to live again the spirit of Toronto Christmas past. The programme includes :

  • The founding of the Town of York and the Battle of York
  • Toronto’s Rebel Christmas (December 1837)
  • Charles Dickens, Toronto, and "A Christmas Carol"
  • Robertson Davies’ Christmas Ghost Stories

    DIRECTIONS TO TORONTO’S FIRST POST OFFICE

    Toronto’s First Post Office is located at 260 Adelaide Street East across from George Brown College. It is one block north of King and 1½ blocks east of Jarvis.

    CARS : Paid parking is available to the north side of the building; enter off George Street.

    TTC : A walk from the King subway station is under ten minutes or, if you prefer, eastbound streetcars can be taken for two stops.

    Wheelchair access is available at the north entrance only, via the George Street parking lot. Please call in advance if wheelchair access is required as the lot is invariably crowded.
